In our work with leaders in organizations, we sometimes see individuals who are dissatisfied with their jobs. This led us to begin providing career transition services to help people find a career that is better suited for their unique personality, interests, and skill set. Research suggests that 45-55% of employed people are dissatisfied with their job. Of those who are satisfied, only 14-17% say they are “very satisfied.”1 We help individuals discover the careers that are the best fit for them to enhance their job and life satisfaction.
In addition, we work with many individuals who are approaching retirement age, but still wish to lead an active and productive life. We have learned that the majority of baby boomers are not interested in quitting work altogether but, rather, they wish to redirect their focus and find a different path. Thus, we also consult with individuals to help them find a new direction after they officially “retire” from their primary career.
Data from a 2002 AARP survey of employed workers aged 45 to 74 highlights the shifting attitudes of employed baby boomers towards work.2
The majority (69%) of those interviewed plan to continue working beyond traditional retirement age.
More than a third (34%) said they would work part-time for interest or enjoyment.
19% said they would work at part-time jobs for necessary income.
10% plan to start their own businesses.
28% of older workers said they would not work at all after they reach retirement age.
The processes for helping individuals with either mid-career or post-retirement transitions are very similar, although the outcomes will differ based on the needs of the individual.
